A century of moving industry forward

Tata Chemicals South Africa (Pty) Ltd has been part of South Africa's commercial and industrial fabric for more than 100 years. From our base in the Port of Durban, we operate two interconnected businesses — the supply of high-purity industrial chemicals, and licensed bulk cargo handling for importers, exporters, and commodity traders. Together, they make us one of the most established and operationally significant chemical and logistics businesses at South Africa's largest port.

Our Story

Where We Come From

Our story in South Africa begins in 1902, with the discovery of soda ash deposits at Lake Magadi in the East African Rift Valley. Over the following century, the business that would eventually become Tata Chemicals South Africa changed hands several times — passing through Brunner Mond, ICI, and the Brunner Mond Group — before Tata Chemicals Limited acquired a majority stake in 2005 and full ownership in 2006.

Today, TCSA operates as a wholly owned subsidiary of Tata Chemicals Limited, a global chemicals company with operations in India, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Kenya. As the world's third largest soda ash producer, Tata Chemicals brings both the scale and the quality infrastructure that our South African customers and partners depend on.

More than a century after that first discovery, we remain a cornerstone of the South African chemicals supply chain — continuously adapting, investing, and growing.

What We Do

Two Businesses. One Integrated Operation.

TCSA operates across two distinct but complementary areas of business. They share infrastructure, people, and values and together they make us a uniquely capable partner for South Africa's manufacturing, mining, and logistics sectors.

Chemical Supply

Importing and distributing the chemicals that keep industry running.

We are one of the largest importers of Sodium Carbonate (Soda Ash) into South Africa. Our core business is the importing, handling, distributing, and marketing of soda ash and related chemicals to industries across the country and the broader southern African region.

Our products are manufactured within the Tata Chemicals group at facilities in North America, India, the United Kingdom, and Kenya. They are shipped as bulk commodities to our Durban terminal, where they are received, stored, and then distributed to customers via our own logistics network.

The industries we serve include glass manufacturing, water treatment, detergent production, metallurgical processing, food and nutrition, blending and processing, and power generation. We also supply chemicals to mining beneficiation operations in Namibia and Zambia, and manage on-site chemical silos for customers across South Africa on a daily basis.

Our product range includes:

  • Soda Ash (Sodium Carbonate): High Purity, Standard Ash Magadi, Crush Refined
  • Bicarbonate of Soda: Food Grade and Technical Grade
  • Sodium Sulphate
  • Detergent chemicals and water treatment chemicals
  • Animal nutrition inputs and crop growth chemicals

Terminal Operations

Licensed quay-side handling for bulk imports and exports.

Alongside our chemicals business, TCSA operates as a licensed Terminal Operator (TOL) at the Port of Durban. One of a small number of operators with direct quay-side access at Africa's busiest port. This licence enables us to handle bulk imports and exports on behalf of manufacturers, mines, and commodity traders, managing the full process from vessel arrival through to cargo storage and onward delivery.

Our terminal infrastructure includes three direct Tata bulk handling facilities, specialised conveyor systems, dedicated equipment, and enclosed storage that protects product integrity throughout the handling process. We handle approximately 568,000 mt of bulk cargo annually, as well as around 300 containers per year, and maintain storage capacity of up to 55,000 mt for bulk consignments and 6,000 mt for containerised cargo.

The commodities we handle through our terminal include coal, gypsum, clinker, iron ore, manganese, chrome, and other mineral and metal commodities. We also handle project cargo destined for power development projects in Zambia and mining developments across the SADC region.

Our Presence

South Africa and Beyond

Our primary operations are centred on the Port of Durban, but our commercial reach extends across southern Africa. We supply chemical products and commodity handling services to customers in South Africa, Namibia, Zambia, Angola, the DRC, Nigeria, and elsewhere across the SADC region.

Within South Africa, our logistics network reaches mines and manufacturing facilities across the country, with a fleet of trucks managing daily deliveries and silo replenishment for some of South Africa's largest industrial operators.

As part of Tata Chemicals Limited, we are also connected to a wider global network of sourcing, production, and technical expertise, ensuring that our South African customers benefit from world-class product quality and supply chain reliability.

How We Operate

Safety, quality, and accountability — non-negotiable.

TCSA operates across two distinct but complementary areas of business. They share infrastructure, people, and values and together they make us a uniquely capable partner for South Africa's manufacturing, mining, and logistics sectors.

Safety

Safety is a core value at TCSA, not a compliance exercise. We are committed to zero harm — to our people, our assets, and the environment and we will not compromise on this in pursuit of commercial goals. Every aspect of our terminal and logistics operations is designed and managed with the safety of our employees and the surrounding port community in mind.

Quality

Our chemical products are backed by ISO-certified quality management systems, with every shipment traceable from its point of manufacture to delivery at the customer's facility. This traceability is not incidental, it is fundamental to our value proposition. Our customers work in industries where material quality directly affects their output and their reputation, and we take that responsibility seriously.

Accountability

Our terminal operations are managed through integrated SAP processes, providing accurate reporting and full accountability across every step of the handling, storage, and delivery process. Our customers have visibility of their cargo, and our teams are equipped to respond quickly when circumstances change.

How We Operate

Global Roots.
Local Commitment.

Tata Chemicals South Africa is part of Tata Chemicals Limited, which is in turn part of the Tata Group, one of India's oldest and most respected industrial conglomerates, with operations across more than 100 countries. The values that guide us — integrity, sustainability, and service to society are shared across the group and embedded in the way we conduct ourselves in South Africa.

Being part of this family gives us access to world-class production facilities, technical expertise, and a global quality infrastructure. But our commitment is local and our responsibility to operate safely, fairly, and sustainably is anchored in the communities and environment we are part of.

Whether you're interested in our chemical products, our terminal handling services, or simply want to learn more about who we are, our team is available to help.
